In this example, Engis Corporation in Wheeling, IL, was expanding its operations to grow their laboratorial and testing environments and took the opportunity to add makeup air for a growing manufacturing facility as well.

Cartland Kraus Engineering supported MTI Construction Services in designing multiple systems for the makeup air throughout the facility.  Direct fired gas heating was considered early on for the gain in efficiency it offers over indirect fired equipment. Titan also offered packaged cooling, utilizing the latest in modulating compressor technology to allow tight temperature and humidity control.  With deep modulation capability on both the heating and cooling, and modulating reheat for humidity control, Titan Air is able to offer a VAV packaged solution capable of maintaining tight temperature and humidity control to low airflows while maintaining the highest efficiency possible.

Have you ever taken an air shower? Every day the Subaru Team in the painting department of Subaru Assembly in Lafayette, IN do just that prior to entering the painting area. They enter the painting area by walking down a hall that has five Mars Air Doors suspended above them showering them with air to prevent contaminants from entering the painting area. The high expectations for only first quality paint finishes on the Subaru automobiles requires exceptional cleanliness in all the areas where the units are receiving coatings.

In order to meet the levels of cleanliness required for their quality control, the workers suit up in clean uniforms including head covers, shoe covers and even beard covers to prevent dust and hair from becoming airborne and ruining the finish on their automobiles as they pass through the painting area.

Not only are they required to don these uniforms they also must take an “air shower” to assure they have not picked up any foreign objects on their uniforms as they put them on. This air shower occurs automatically as the worker walks down a specially constructed hallway entry to go into the painting area. The air shower is activated upon opening the first entry door and remains on as a worker traverses the length of the approximately 20’ long hallway. Using two 48” air doors, one at each entry and three 60” air doors in the center exposes each worker entering the area to five separate sweeps of air as the person passes through the hall.

Working with the Gunn & Pegelow Applications team, Brad Mullen of J. R. Kelly Co. developed and installed this shower room in coordination with the quality control and engineering departments of Subaru.

Recently, we worked with Titan Air to win the order for a quantity of 14 makeup air, heating and ventilating, and air handling units for Amtrak in Chicago.  Due to the high potential of CO and CO2 gain in the space, Amtrak had a large requirement for exhaust air and thus makeup air.  Ultimately it was decided that extracting heat from the exhaust air would be extremely advantageous, especially on a large scale such as this; gas heat also became a driving factor in the replacement of a decades-old steam system already existing on site.

We were able to respond with several units from 10,000 to 30,000 CFM with a variety of different configurations while still meeting the customer’s delivery requirements.  The winning combination in the end was flexibility in design, engineering responsiveness, and fast production.

This project is a great example of what we can do to respond to the growing market needs for energy recovery we are seeing in the Chicagoland area all the way up through large industrial applications.  Not only do heat and energy recovery play a role in efficiency, but direct fired burners, where all of the heat is delivered to the space, is an important part of maintaining high efficiency.  Thanks to Amtrak, Titan Air, and all of the people involved in the success of this project!  Call us if you’d like to talk about the details.
