Catch the Wave Swim School in South Beloit, Illinois, is a facility dedicated to providing swimming instruction to children of all ages. Founded by Troy and Deborah Stoffregen, the school is designed to create a welcoming and family-friendly environment year-round. As part of their ongoing commitment to improving guest comfort and energy efficiency, the owners worked with Gunn & Pegelow to implement climate control solutions in both indoor and outdoor areas of the facility.

Climate Control Challenges in a High-Traffic Facility

The swim school features an indoor pool area and convenient outdoor patio seating for parents. Previously, we worked with Catch the Wave to outfit the outdoor space with Bromic heating solutions. With our help, parents could now watch their children swim from a comfortable outdoor environment. However, that created a new challenge. As parents and students entered and exited the building, it was difficult to maintain consistent indoor climate control.

With a warm indoor pool environment and multiple entry points, Catch the Wave faced seasonal comfort issues. During winter months, customers commented on the discomfort caused by cold drafts entering the building whenever doors were opened. The influx of cold air disrupted the warm pool atmosphere and increased the burden on the HVAC system. In the summer, the warm, humid air also disturbed the indoor environment.

Gunn & Pegelow’s Solution

Gunn & Pegelow worked with Catch the Wave to determine what would be the best solution for their needs. We discovered that options like door strips were not ideal, as they wouldn’t provide the results needed. After examining their existing infrastructure, we determined that electrically heated Mars Model LPV2 Air Curtains were the best option.

The LPV2 Air Curtains from Mars are activated by a switch when the doors open, providing a heated stream of air across each opening. This creates a protective barrier that keeps cold air out in the winter and humid air and insects out in the summer. The electrically heated units were chosen for their ability to deliver consistent, high-performance airflow across the full width of the doors. Not to mention, the custom-sized electric models worked with their existing infrastructure, providing a cost-effective and low-maintenance solution.

The results were immediate: guests no longer experienced winter drafts and the overall comfort of the pool space significantly improved. In the summer, the Mars Air Curtains work in tandem with a Desert Aire dehumidification unit to reduce humidity levels and energy usage. By limiting the entry of hot, moist air, the air curtains lessen the workload on the dehumidification system, delivering ongoing operational savings.

The new Cintas facility has unique properties that make air curtains crucial to the building’s success. Part of the facility features shipping and receiving dock doors that facilitate the movement of goods in and out of the building. Another section of the facility houses equipment used to clean uniforms and mats. Additionally, there’s a separate office space for Cintas employees who handle scheduling, billing, and customer service concerns.

Because the facility is used for so many different tasks, Cintas needed a solution to help with air infiltration and environmental separation. With the help of the Gunn & Pegelow team, Cintas chose Mars Air’s LPV2 air curtains.

After the initial walk-through, the Gunn & Pegelow team identified that the facility needed a total of 15 air curtains — and they needed them fast. Working with Mars Air, Gunn & Pegelow team members were able to get the units shipped within one month of ordering. From there, Gunn & Pegelow offered job site support over multiple visits with the contractor. Working with Mars, we were able to solve the problems of timely delivery, proper mounting, controls integration, and timely resolution of post-sale problems. Additionally, we were able to solve concerns about the air curtain positioning above the door openings, as well as the proper positioning of the door switches and control panels.

The Solution

Our HVAC experts turned to the innovative manufacturer of premium fan and exhaust fan systems Strobic Air Technologies to build our solution. The system detailed below includes three Strobic Air TriStack Fans, Model TS4. Two fans are utilized for total exhaust while one fan is on standby.

The total exhaust of this system is 42,650 cfm at 6.2” pressure.

• One custom plenum
• Energy recovery coils, with coil face and bypass dampers and actuators

Additional System Details

Warranty – The warranty for the complete fan, motor, bearings, and drive train is seven-years limited. ERU plenum, dampers, etc. carry a standard 18-month warranty.
Noise – The sound level of the system at 50’ meets the neighborhood requirement of 57 dBa that was listed on the Project Drawing Specification.
Shipping and Weight – ERU ships in two sections (the fans ship separately). The heaviest piece weighs 12,500 pounds.

In September 2013, Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Illinois embarked on a critical renovation of its Emergency Department. Recently, we worked with Titan Air to win the order for a quantity of 14 makeup air, heating and ventilating, and air handling units for Amtrak in Chicago. Due to the high potential of CO and CO2 gain in the space, Amtrak had a large requirement for exhaust air and thus makeup air. Ultimately it was decided that extracting heat from the exhaust air would be extremely advantageous, especially on a large scale such as this; gas heat also became a driving factor in the replacement of a decades-old steam system already existing on site.

We were able to respond with several units from 10,000 to 30,000 CFM with a variety of different configurations while still meeting the customer’s delivery requirements. The winning combination in the end was flexibility in design, engineering responsiveness, and fast production.

This project is a great example of what we can do to respond to the growing market needs for energy recovery we are seeing in the Chicagoland area all the way up through large manufacturing applications. Not only do heat and energy recovery play a role in efficiency, but direct fired burners, where all of the heat is delivered to the space, is an important part of maintaining high efficiency. In April 2024, the West Aurora School District transportation facility faced substantial noise disruptions due to a new make-up air unit (MAU) installed directly above the mechanics’ workspace. This noise was so problematic that it impacted the efficiency and comfort of the mechanics, drawing the attention and intervention of the West Aurora School District Superintendent.

To tackle this challenge, Gunn & Pegelow began by getting a solid footing into the project by consulting the engineering team and understanding all of the solutions that have been previously tested. In initial discussions with the engineering team, they focused on identifying the root cause of the noise and exploring potential solutions. They soon discovered that the early efforts included attempts by the T&B contractor to balance the air and adjust belts and drives to slow the fan. When air balancing failed to resolve the noise issue, Gunn & Pegelow’s startup technicians attempted to adjust the belts and drives.

Unfortunately, these measures did not significantly reduce the noise either. Recognizing the need for a more robust solution, Gunn & Pegelow collaborated with local mechanical installers to find the best solution.

Uncovering An Innovative Solution to Control Fan Speed

Kevin McLaughlin from Gunn & Pegelow then suggested installing a Mitsubishi Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) to control the fan speed and reduce noise for the 20 HP motor. Demonstrating their commitment to resolving the issue, G&P provided the Variable Frequency Drive to the contractor at no added cost. Despite the few initial setbacks, this advanced solution allowed precise control over the fan speed, effectively reducing the noise to acceptable levels.

The installation of the Mitsubishi VFD dramatically reduced the noise generated by the MAU, leading to a much more comfortable and productive working environment for the mechanics. Lambeau Field, home to the Green Bay Packers since 1957, recently unveiled a brand-new Alumni Suite that accommodates former players during all home games. The new Alumni Suite Terrace, an 800-square-foot space, needed an effective heating solution to ensure comfort during games, especially given the harsh cold temperatures typical of Green Bay.

Chicago’s extreme winter weather posed a significant problem for the station. When trains arrived or departed, the open doors allowed cold air to rush inside. This both created discomfort for passengers and increased energy costs. To address this issue, Amtrak sought a solution that would maintain a comfortable environment while reducing energy consumption. Gunn & Pegelow provided a custom-designed commercial air curtain system to create an invisible barrier between indoor and outdoor environments. The project, a collaborative effort involving Jacobs Engineering and Amtrak engineers, required careful consideration of the unique challenges posed by the station environment.

Our Process

The first major hurdle was overcoming the locomotive exhaust, which comes out of the top of the train and can exceed 600°F. At this temperature, any equipment placed directly above the locomotive would be damaged due to the extreme heat. With that in mind, the Gunn & Pegelow team suggested a vertical mount kit, creating an air barrier from side to side instead of overhanging the doors. This resulted in an effective solution and improved the life span of the units.

The team also created a specially designed control panel to manage all four air curtains simultaneously, ensuring optimal performance. Overall, sixteen Mars Air Curtains were installed, with four units per door across four doors.

The implementation of this air curtain solution has significantly improved the Chicago station’s energy efficiency and passenger comfort. Not to mention, this solution reduces the heating load required to maintain a comfortable temperature. This decreases the frequency and duration of heating system operation, leading to lower energy consumption and costs.

However, the equipment needed to fit within a tight space, which proved to be a challenge. It needed to sit within the hospital’s basement, above steel I-Beams over an office area. With a number of HW/CW piping, gas piping, and electrical units obscuring the space, Gunn & Pegelow was tasked with creating an innovative approach.

Gunn & Pegelow’s Commercial HVAC Solution

The Gunn & Pegelow team ultimately had to create a bespoke solution for the space. Working with the hospital’s contractor, the team installed one Klimor EVO-S 0750, which was half the size of the existing unit. Along with that, the application called for a range of other equipment, including a mixing box with dampers, MERV filters, Danfoss VFD, a CW coil, and an HW coil. Additionally, the team incorporated direct-driven plenum fans for redundancy.

After the equipment was installed and functional, Mount Sinai Hospital experienced a range of benefits. Not only did the facility gain some space in the tight basement, but the new equipment has also increased efficiency and redundancy. Additionally, the modular solution can connect to the BAS system. In this example, Engis Corporation in Wheeling, IL, was expanding its operations to grow their laboratorial and testing environments and took the opportunity to add makeup air for a growing manufacturing facility as well.

Cartland Kraus Engineering supported MTI Construction Services in designing multiple systems for the makeup air throughout the facility. Direct fired gas heating was considered early on for the gain in efficiency it offers over indirect fired equipment. Titan also offered packaged cooling, utilizing the latest in modulating compressor technology to allow tight temperature and humidity control. With deep modulation capability on both the heating and cooling, and modulating reheat for humidity control, Titan Air is able to offer a VAV packaged solution capable of maintaining tight temperature and humidity control to low airflows while maintaining the highest efficiency possible.

Originally belonging to the Potawatomi tribe, it stands as the first and oldest park in the area. The park wanted to elevate its offerings with the introduction of Howard Park Public House, a full-service bar and restaurant designed with an open concept.

The open design, and open kitchen, necessitated a unique heating and cooling solution with the capacity to provide varying amounts of outside air for ventilation, along with flexible exhaust makeup.

The unique design requirements of Howard Park Public House, with its open kitchen and ventilation needs, posed specific challenges. Gunn & Pegelow partnered closely with M/E Design Services & Alliance to identify an HVAC solution that could seamlessly integrate into the open design while meeting the demand for optimal air quality.

Gunn & Pegelow’s Restaurant Ventilation Solution

Gunn & Pegelow and the M/E Design Services & Alliance Architects team ultimately selected the Reznor YDHA high outside air system. This heating and cooling unit was chosen for its exceptional ability to handle high percentages of outside air, crucial for the ventilation requirements of the open kitchen design. The control sequence prioritizes space comfort, offering leading-edge technology, including 2” foam panel construction, fully programmed DDC controls with a user-friendly thermostat interface, ECM supply and condenser fans, and patented hot gas reheat for dehumidification with superior ISMRE.

Additionally, the outdoor comfort at Howard Park Public House is extended to the restaurant patio and ice skating rental shop during colder months. This is made possible through Bromic Tungsten Gas heaters strategically placed around the perimeter of the building.

The first challenge the Gunn and Pegelow and NCG Hospitality teams faced involved creating a heat layout to maintain a consistent, uniform temperature in various outdoor spaces, including a lounge area, and suites with outdoor patios for the 9th-floor rooftop restaurant. To address the unique requirements of heating the outdoor areas, Gunn & Pegelow turned to their long-term partner, Bromic.
